Some Dangerous Love Arrairs

I WAS BROWSING THROUGH SOME OLD SERMONS the other day. When I say “old” I mean old! Some of these sermons were typed by me on a typewriter. Some of the paper is turning brown and is frayed around the edges. However, the Word of God never grows old and is never outdated! In June of 1981, I preached a sermon called “Some Dangerous Love Affairs”. Here are the points:

THOSE WHO ARE LOVERS OF THEMSELVES. 2 Timothy 3:2 says that in the last days “men shall be lovers of their own selves”. That is a good description of our day! Selfishness is at an all-time high. However, Christianity means dying to yourself.

THOSE WHO LOVE MONEY. 1 Timothy 6:10 says that “the love of money is the root of all evil”. Instead of loving the Almighty God, many love the almighty dollar. However, believers are to love God supremely.

THOSE WHO LOVE THE PRAISE OF MEN. In Matthew 6:5 Jesus told His disciples not to pray like the hypocrites pray because they “love to pray standing in the synagogues in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men”. However, the approval of God is better than the applause of men.

THOSE WHO LOVE DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT. In John 3:19 Jesus said that “men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil”. Evil things happen in the darkness! However, Christians are to be the light of the world! Shine for Jesus and push back the darkness.

THOSE WHO LOVE THE WORLD. 1 John 2:15 says to “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world”. The “world” describes a system of evil that is against God. It is impossible to love God and the world at the same time.

THOSE WHO LOVE PLEASURE MORE THAN GOD. 2 Timothy 3:4 says that in the last days men will be “lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God”. Wow! People today live for pleasure. Watch out for these “dangerous love affairs”!
