Seven Dangerous Love Affairs

Seven Dangerous Love Affairs

SEVERAL YEARS AGO (back in the 80’s) I preached a sermon titled, “Seven Dangerous Love Affairs”. It was a very topical sermon. My text was I John 2:15-17. I ran across the old outline last week and thought I would share it with you today.

LOVERS OF THEIR OWN SELVES. Paul said that in the last days, people would be “lovers of their own selves” (II Timothy 3:2). Those days have surely come! However, real Christianity means dying to self (Galatians 2:20).

LOVERS OF MONEY. It’s not money that is the root of all evil, but the “love of money” (I Timothy 6:10). It was the love of money that kept the Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17-22) from receiving the gift of eternal life.

LOVE OF THE PRAISE OF MEN. Jesus accused the Pharisees of praying so they could be seen and heard by men (Matthew 6:5). Ego has kept many people from being saved, and may keep saved people from receiving a reward.

LOVE OF DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT. Jesus compared Himself to light and evil to darkness (John 3:19). The task of believers is to live in the light and to light the world (Matthew 5:14-16).

LOVE OF THE WORLD. (I finally got to my text in I John 2:15-17!) The “world” refers to a system of evil controlled by Satan. If believers are in step with the world, they are out of step with God.

LOVE OF PLEASURE MORE THAN GOD. Again, Paul was speaking of the last days (II Timothy 3:4). Thousands of people crowd into sports venues every Lord’s Day, while a precious few come to the houses of worship.

LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTIL DEATH. In the last days it will be dangerous to live for Jesus (Revelation 12:11). There will be some who will seal their testimony with their own blood.
