Remember Year of Discipleship

SUMMER IS COMING! How do I know? Today is “Senior Recognition Day”, so that means school is almost over for another year. And, Memorial Day Weekend is next week and it has become “the unofficial beginning of summer.” Plus, there is a lot of talk around my house and the church house about Vacation Bible School! So, here are some things for you to remember during the summer of ’18.

REMEMBER this is the Year of Discipleship at Westside. Way back in January I launched the year by preaching a message about God’s PLAN FOR DISCIPLESHIP from our theme verse, 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Our goal is to reach people with the gospel, baptize them, and teach them the truths of sacred scripture.

REMEMBER the disciplines of the Christian life. Way back in January I preached about the PRIORITY OF DISCIPLESHIP from 2 Peter 2:2, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” Nothing you do is more important than reading the Word of God, hearing the Word of God, studying the Word of God, memorizing the Word of God, meditating on the Word of God, and applying the Word of God.

REMEMBER the purpose of the Christian disciplines (Bible reading, praying, worshipping, etc.) is to produce godliness. Way back in January I preached a message about the PURPOSE OF DISCIPLESHIP from 1 Timothy 4:7, “But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.” Godliness does not happen by accident. You must exercise or discipline yourself to be godly.

REMEMBER your church this summer! One of the things that marks you as a child of God is your faithfulness in gathering with God’s people for worship. I hope to see you here all summer!
