I Like to Fish

I LIKE TO FISH. My grandfather took me fishing when I was a boy and I was hooked (pun intended)! However, sometimes I get busy and don’t take time to fish. Such has been the case in recent years. A couple of weeks ago I took my grandson fishing and remembered how much fun it is. I also remembered that Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19). So, here are some tips on fishing…for fish and men!

YOU MUST GO WHERE THE FISH ARE. Fish are in creeks, ponds, lakes, rivers, and oceans. They are not in swimming pools! If you want to catch fish, you must go where the fish are. If you are going to fish for men, you must go into all the world (Mark 16:15). People are everywhere, i.e., neighborhoods, offices, restaurants, schools, ballgames, etc. Tragically, we spend most of our time fishing in the church swimming pool!

YOU MUST USE THE RIGHT BAIT. Fish like worms, minnows, stink bait, and even artificial lures! You can’t catch fish without good bait. The “bait” for catching men is the Word of God. Jesus told us to go into all the world and share the Word of God. The “Romans Road” is the Word of God. The FAITH outline is full of the Word of God. People are attracted to a Savior who did something about their sin. However, we often use our programs, personalities, and activities as the bait.

YOU MUST PRESENT THE BAIT. There are many ways to present the bait to the fish: a hook and bobber, a top water lure, a spinner, a plastic worm, etc. Jesus always presented the Word of God, but He didn’t always present it the same way. Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about the new birth (John 3). Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman about the living water (John 4). There are many ways to present the gospel!

YOU MUST SET THE HOOK. Setting the hook is commitment time. I’ve missed a lot of fish because I tried to set the hook too early or too late. When sharing the gospel, there comes a time for calling for a commitment to Christ. It’s as easy as asking, “Would you like to receive God’s gift of eternal life right now?” You must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit at this point. But, you will never catch men if you don’t call for a commitment. Now, let’s go fishing…for men!
